I have to agree 100% with Mark, this was a sucker punch no two ways about it, ban the player. I’ll add to this: Abby has a good 20lbs on Lady, and about 3-4 inches in height. She whacked her good and you can see that’s not acting. Her head went bobbing. Nice, now everyone in the world knows Lady is a dirty player. And Abby got the best type of revenge.
Watch the foot placement, using her body to power the punch, she plants her right leg, twists her body in mid-air to use force behind the swing and comes down on her right leg. And of course she lies about it BUT then tacitly admits to it when she justifies what she says she didn’t do. and Cherie has a vendetta so it is really irrelevant what she thinks.
It’s true, the Colombian hit her. However, there is more to this than meets the eye (so to speak). If you LOOK closely, you’ll see that Wambach changes course and cuts off the Colombian, causing the collision, and at the same time, Wambach is pushing the Colombian away with her right arm. Doesn’t change the fact that she was sucker-punched, but does perhaps mitigate the circumstances just a LITTLE BIT. Not much, but it’s interesting no one seems to want to point this out…
@jones isn’t cutting a player off a part of the game aas long as it’s not a trip. using your arm to create space, no foul as long as there’s no push off. She got away with it because the ball wasn’t close enough for the ref’s to be paying attention. It’s a sad bit of poor sportsmanship.
jonesbp…that’s not entirely accurate. Any athlete running down a field or court in their sport will change course to try and keep an opponent from getting a better course. This is a physical sport and so are many others. And it’s expected. In this case, the Columbian player obviously was running at Abby with an obvious intent to try and push her. Not part of physical play, but to hurt her. Dirty play. She loaded up to push and threw an ugly, not-so-graceful upper cut that still did damage.
brilliant gamesmanship by wambach. and no sean you cant impede the progress of another player off the ball, wambach was guilty of obstruction plus her arm went up and shoved before impact. she knew exactly what she was doing and who on the opposing team was dumb enouhg to bite.

Clearly Wambach gets hit in the face, but if you view the other photo Wambach is doing her own pushing. You have to wonder if the sucker punch was in response to the pushing or vice versa, and also what other illegal/unsportsmanlike conduct was going on.
i wear a US jersey have played over 45 years some of that at the professional level and yes wambach should have gotten a yellow for an obstruction and then the arm going up clearly before the punch is thrown. which is why a defender 4 inches shorter got her arm over it to pound wambach so effectively which is clearly a red card. if you cant stay inpartial then stay out of the discussion. i curently wear a US Army uniform so its easy to see where my loyalties lay, that being said.

You might get the wrong impression that she was looking at the player. The US player intentionally collides with the Colombian player and uses the elbow. The Colombia player instantly sees her intentions and immediately starts the punching motion.
The Colombian player was swinging her arm ahead of the collision, but the is not swing she used to hit the player. The offending swing started after the collision. There is an actual pause there.

FIFA Law 12 page 118 impeding the path of another player when neither player are within playing distance of the ball is clearly a foul which is what wambach did no doubt. she knew this would piss off the colombian. lets be educated. you can’t impede someone from behind, barring the use of a rope or chain, you can zig zag all you want off the ball but not into the path of another player. this rule is void when you’re within playing distance of the ball usally considered 3 feet.

3 – If the Colombian were truly going for the ball, she would have gone behind Wambach and taken another route altogether.
4 – As Wambach senses the player approaching, she stick out her arm to protect herself and the space she is in – VERY standard fare for upper levels of play.
5 – The Colombian makes NO attempt to beat Wambach to the spot – she just runs her over from behind while hitting her. It would have been a foul on the Colombian even without the punch.
6 – As far as Wambach impeding, she clearly has a right from being ahead while running to claim the spot to her right if she wants it. I would be amazed if this would get called in a pro game 1 in a thousand times. Obstruction rarely gets called and certainly not for a minor infraction like this.
You’re high! If you watch this as clearly as you stated it is clear that Wambach deviates from her path by a foot and a half. The Columbian player is not required to move. This clearly falls under the impeding rule. The point not up for debate is the punch. And by the way my father played pro as did I and he taught me a long time ago to play with your ears just as much as your eyes. Lady is focused on Womach’s head from the start of the footage. She sees her, she raises her arm, makes a fist and sucker punches her from behind as hard as she can.. If the Columbian girl wouldn’t have positioned her body sideways then she wouldn’t have sucker punched Abby. It was a clear punch. She brought her arm back, made a fist and cleary went for Abby’s face. End of story.
It was certainly not a chance collision. They were nowhere near the ball, Wambach cut toward Andrade and brought her shoulder into her, probably trying to push her away from the play, but then she was clearly punched, there is no doubt about it. The game today is totally out of control IMO – tripping, diving, shirt-pulling, intentional hands ball, all being allowed by the refs to various degrees. You have to expect something like this is going to happen, I don’t excuse the punch, it is definitely wrong, but if the rules of football were really enforced, we would see quite a different game (and it would be a higher scoring game, since most infractions that go unpunished favor the defense).
Wambach definitely DID NOT cut toward Andrade. It was clearly the other way around Wambach was already passing Andrade on a straight line when Andrade swerved into her, and tossed the haymaker. But you are right, it was a punch.

Wambach and many of the American girls are larger and heavier than the Colombians, and any collision is going to go the way you’re taught in high school physics. The Americans were not playing dirty, but Wambach said in her interview that Colombia essentially came out trying to physically intimidate the Americans. Guess that didn’t work.

Abby was looking forward the entire time, and the columbian came up and sucker punched her. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. a few plays later, the same gal runs into abby as she is kicking. Yes, the usa pushes and shoves and all that, just like the other team. Its part of the game. But there is a no hands rule for soccer and not just for the ball!

There was no play on the ball, no defensive position or move to be gained. At BEST “Lady” is trying to grab Wanbach’s jersey and pull her down…you can see her hand stops around the chest of Wambach after the hit. At worst it’s just as described – an attack from behind where she shoves her in the back and then smacks her in the face.
No accident, either way. And the whining afterwards about the USA getting all the calls? Obviously they didn’t get this one and it was well deserved.
The video clearly shows the Columbian running up from behind, looking at the Americans face, winding up with her right fist and watching her hit land on the Americans face.

i think the girls seem focussed on ball as they are running forward. the inevitable collision and trying to keep balance caused it. i do not see bad intent.
“Trying to keep balance” Doesn’t include pivoting your body in order to reach your arm across yourself & deliberately punch someone. This is FULL of bad intent. I play soccer myself & I’m pretty good at deciphering between what is intentional & what is not. This was by far, intentional. This lady just made her whole team & country look bad.

As anyone can see by looking at the gif frame by frame (just right-click and save it to the desktop, then open it in an image viewer) Andrade’s RIGHT fist CROSSES HER BODY to make contact with the TALLER Wambach’s face. Idiot.
Of course it was an aggressive action. She came up from the side and positioned herself to punch her face. She had no other reason to be turning toward like she was, since there was no play on a ball. Just running down the field.
It looks like a punch, but hard to see what Wambach did with her right arm. Any how, love the way the Americans play, but Wambach is no angel when it comes to dishing out elbows.
As Andrade encroached, Wambach was fending her off with her right arm. There may have been some elbow involved, but the punch was clearly thrown to the face.
This was CLEARLY a punch. Anyone who is saying otherwise just doesn’t want to believe that Lady Andrade was a poor sport. Sports are competitive and can bring out the worst in people who play to win. This is what happened. Her frustration with losing and not being able to do anything about it was channeled into a hard right fist. She did nothing but bring shame to her country, and the people defending Lady Andrade are in denial. We see this every year in the olympics. If it isn’t a headbutt, trip, or shove, it’s a sucker punch. I hope Lady Andrade gets what is coming to her.
This is how I see it:
a) Speedy Columbian outruns Wambach at a good pace, either to mark her or chase the play
b) Wambach angles in to slow her down and proceeds to give a solid and high elbow to Columbian neck or chest
c) Columbian loses balance a bit (look at her feet) and arm comes flying upward and hits Wambach in the face.
No wind up on Columbian part. Could she have stopped her arm or did she let it continue to retaliate for the elbow? From this replay I’ll never know. So I don’t see sanctions coming out of this.
If I were Wambach I wouldn’t call too much for a review. If they decide on the Columbian being suspended then I don’t see how they can overlook the elbow. And they would both be out. Much more important Wambach stays in the tournament for the duration.
And do I think there was some acting? Yes. That’s why I prefer to play and watch hockey. No acting. And both players would have gotten two minutes. Soccer is still good outside of that.
You can clearly see Wambach leaning in with her legs before they even make contact. She plants her feet at an angle. She was trying to get the other player out of the play and the elbow comes in way BEFORE too, it is not even remotely close. Aside from the violent elbow most leaning in is tolerated nowadays, unless the other play embellishes or there is a goal scoring opportunity missed.

If you watch the game tape, you see that Wambach already was past Andrade. The Colombian speeded up and encroached on Wambach, not the other way around. You can call that an elbow, or you can call it fending off, but the punch was clearly thrown.
Watch it again. Wamback is off the ball and “jogging” down the field. Lady comes running up as fast as she can to run into her. Abby pushes her off w/ elbow, Lady hits with fist. I think Lady had that planned all along to hit her. Knew all attention would be around the ball, and she would be able to get away with hitting Abby.
Oh yea, and did you notice after running at a slant toward Abby, Lady goes back to her original “running lane” (don’t know what to call it) and then runs straight ahead
Sunbird, I don’t suppose the fact that a reporter at the game noted the Colombian player tried throwing a SECOND punch later at Wambach’s head and missed by hitting her neck—that shouldn’t matter, right?
I disagree that it was after. After she is hit in the face she falls completely the other way to the thrown elbow.
In any case, retaliation would be even worse, it would also be an immediate red card.
Again, for the sake of Wambach and the US winning, it is way better if this play is not reviewed from what I saw here. The US could get one of their best players out for a few games for the possibility of getting a player ejected on a team that will not go too far.
Remember the pressure placed on Colombian players? The guy who scored an own goal was off’ed when he returned to Colombia, as I recall. This was a dirty shot by a desperate Lady.
Watch in real time… the acceleration of the fist before impact shows it was clearly meant to be a punch. She’s lucky Wambach didn’t beat her a@@. Between her and Solo, they can probably take on the entire Columbian team!

Abby Wambach is one of the best female soccer players in the world. The Columbian girl could not beat her by playing soccer so she throws an illegal punch to stop Amy from scoring in that play. Perhaps the Columbian girl will eventually learn that a good soccer player focuses on the ball. The Columbian girl was playing Abby’s game because she has no game of her own.
The Columbians have showed over the years how violent they are & guess what? They have never been #1 , men or women. If they keep the same pace they never will be # 1. My thoughts are, keep up the foul play and stay losers.

There was no reason for the Colombian players angle… the ball was not there and even if she wanted to stay with her, they should have both been facing towards the ball. Lady Andrade should have been kicked out of the game. Total bad sportsmanship and then lying about what she did.She is no lady at all. Boo!

Soccer players do have a flair for the dramatics when getting hit to draw the attention of the refs. In fact, everytime I watch a soccer game I have to remind myself it’s NOT a World Wrestling Entertainment event (AKA smackdown or Wrestlemania). When my son started to play soccer, I was thinking of hiring an acting coach rather than a soccer coach duiring the offseason. But seriously, this was a deliberate sucker punch and the Colombian was probably hoping that the refs would not catch it since the ball was not that close by.

I agree Todd. Definite Red Card. The reason why it wasn’t called is because the referee didn’t see the play. Hopefully they will review the play and the Colombian player will be expelled from the Olympics. That is the only way to keep this type of thing happening again.

That said, Wambach in the post-game interview said the Colombians clearly came out intending to intimidate the Americans and get inside their heads with their physical play, in an attempt to even out the mismatch. Physical play is one thing, but socking somebody in the eye is inexcusable. Oh, and later punching her in the neck. That’s inexcusable too.
Look at her body, she runs up behind Wambach, gets next to her, then her body rotates towards Wambach and she throws her arm and hand into her face. There’s literally no way it was an accident or them colliding

The dirty Colombian Player even pushed Wambach with her left arm (hidden from camera view) setting Wambach up for the sucker punch. That move by the Colombian was a set up to possibly get Wambach to retaliate and then get thrown out so the U S would lose one of their best scorers. The Columbian should be playing Hockey where if she pulled the crap the U S team would have taken her apart..
I was wondering if anyone else had caught that. It looks to me, too, that Andrade gave her a one-two punch. First from behind with her left, about shoulder high, you can see Wambach jerk a little forward & then *POW* right into her face. I think that is why you see Wambach’s arm come forward like it does, she’s trying to catch herself from the unexpected hit from behind just before she gets sucker punched. Then watch Andrade’s feet and hips. Nothing else, just watch her feet. She comes clear off her feet to land her blow, pushing off with her right foot, then coming back down on her right foot, doing a stutter-step to keep her balance.
Andrade needs to be benched for the rest of the Games & fined for poor sportsmanship.
Come on ya’ll, it’s quite clear to see, if you really pay attention to the video, that the American intentionally changes direction and throws a shoulder/elbow into the other player to try to knock her to the ground. The other player then tries to keep from falling down by grabbing the front of the american’s shirt….and while doing so, makes contact with her face. Somewhat intentionally? Probably yes, but only because the American tried to knock her to the ground. In the end, justice is served. The instigator gets a swollen eye. Oh, by the way, I’m american and hope the american women keep kicking booty!
The Colombian player comes from behind, no ball in sight AND with her right hand — crosses and hits Abby. Having played some soccer myself, it would seem this couldn’t have been regular game play. Sadly officials cannot see everything that goes on or have a really poor angle. BUT great win USA, keep up the classy play!

I don’t think any of you have ever played soccer but it is ok. The truth is that you all in way right. It was an accident at first, but the Colombian (but the way that is the right way to spell it. It is not Columbia South Carolina, It is Colombia in south America, so those who spelled it wrong are ignorant and has ashamed his/her country, wink wink) did probably took advantage of the opportunity to punch the girl. But please, you guys need to watch or play more soccer, do not make this such a big deal when it is not. And I have seen other Americans doing the same and even worst.
LOOK CLOSELY AT BODY MOTIONS AND REACTIONS! Cherie angles towards Lady slightly to keep her out of play. The Colombian player is moving into her at a less steep angle. Lady pushes hard off her left foot to body into Cherie. She turns her upper body towards Cherie, pushing out with her chest. Cherie’s arm/elbow rises to push her off/keep her back. Now notice how Lady’s left arm disappears from view entirely. It is pushing or striking Cherie in the back, which briefly start Cherie pitching slightly forward and away from Lady. But it is quickly followed with the turning of Lady’s right shoulder inward, and the right hand comes around into contact with Cheries face. It is this twisting of the her own body that forces Lady to hop on her right leg, since she cannot cross the left leg over in normal recovery from the confrontation. What makes it abundantly clear the Colombian player got into the shoving/hitting match on purpose is the fact that she was running much faster than Cherie, could easily have passed her with no contact at all, and entered play ahead of her.
to be honest, i’m not sure, everyone seems to be certain it was a sucker punch but if you take closer look
1.She is running much faster
2. she is looking at the ball, not at where she is running, i played football for a couple of years and its very easy to completely focus on the play (tunnel vision) and not see players
3. when they collide, the colombian hits Abby with her left shoulder causing her left side to go back and right side to go forward. The rotation combined with the extra speed basically means she loses control what do you do when you lose balance, you naturally stick out an arm to rebalance yourself, which unfortunately, smacks Abby in the face (which you can tell was the palm of here hand)

She should be disqualified out of the game. You can’t just hit people and get a way with it! Her coach needs to teach her some manners.
This clip should be review and the Lady sanctioned for her conduct……if we allow sucker punching in games by outclassed players to attempt to injure others it no longer becames sport and takes on the appearace of war and this is hardly the purpose of world games. The “Lady” is a tramp.

First at all, the Columbian deserve to be kicked out the game because there is not ball play between the two players.A foul in action is very different from a deliberate foul without ball.

That game got out of control. I watched the online delay so I didn’t hear the announcers. I love the WNT but Colombia was due a penalty kick (at least one).The ref should have issued a few first half yellow cards to clean-up the game.
On the Wambach-Andrade play, a left elbow would have been understandable but that roundhouse right was inexcusable.

I am half Columbian and whether your for the Columbian team or U.S. you should be able to clearly see that was an intentional aggressive punch to the face. Wambach has quite a bit of height on Andrade and her hands were not naturally going up that high running for an accidental collide, thats ridiculous! FIFA should take disciplinary action against Andrade. Wambach was clearly just running and not instigating anything, the elbow didn’t even come up until after Andrade started delibrately colliding with Wambach with her body for a planned attack.
There is no sucker punch, obviously it’s tough to comment on a sport that you’ve never played or that you pretended to play during High School in some suburbian American hell hole. What you see is simply “Marking” and collisions occur frequently, no fault on either side, no ball required.
As to the references of Colombians and drugs, I’ve lived in both countries as well as in several others and I can assure you, no single country can even come close to the appetite that Americans have for drugs. So what have we learned? In sports, players sometimes try to cheat or take cheap shots. And afterards, they often try to lie about it, or justify their actions. That’s not news. It was a deliberate punch, and Lady got caught. The US won the game, which is the ultimate revenge. Colombia’s punishment is the reward of every team that loses — a long, quiet flight home. And BTW, Columbia is a University where students learn the correct spelling of the South American country of Colombia.
George, Cherie, and other US haters, leftists, and plain idiots, what you see is not open to interpretation. Frame by frame, the Colombian player has her eyes on the US players face while the US player is facing downfield. The Colombian player angles into the US player, her eyes never leaving her face, stops the rhytmic movement of her arms PRIOR to contact, lowers her right arm and brings it up into the face of the US Player. Once that action is complete, then and only then does she turn her face down field without so much as a glance downward after the intial contact. Review any video of accidental player to player contact and the instinctual response is to look at the results of the collision after the impact, even while continuing to run downfield. The Colombian players actions show an attempt to act like the impact never occured. Again, review any video of purposeful contact, and time and time again you will see the perpetuator of the action act like it never occured. The US is comprised of the most diverse population of any country of the world and has been and still is considered the best place to immigrate to. This is what makes this country strong. We have a large contingent of Colombian Americans here as well. I don’t doubt for one minute that they would take the stand of either George or Cherie. This isn’t political, this is about fair play. Justification for her response because of what we ‘can’t see’ is just obsfucation. What we do see speaks for itself.

Wambach threw an elbow and at that second the Colombian throws the punch or is knocked off balance and

I’m a ref and I would have red carded her..had I seen it. There is an obvious shift in her upper body to put force behind the punch. Its a different gait from how she was swinging her arms as she was running. She got cut off and was pissed. Unfortunately, the refs would have to be looking right at them to see the foul. They were most likely watching the action around the ball.

It was a sucker punch, but not planned and not completely the Columbian’s fault.
1- The American changed her running path which crossed with the columbian’s path. They were going to collide no matter what.
2- The columbian was clearly frustrated within the game before their unexpected encounter here (based on her explanation afterwards) and during the collision took it as an opportunity to vent and protect herself.
3- The collision could have been worse had the columbian not done something. Had they continued to take steps along the same running path, they would have tripped over each other easily. Both would have fallen and who knows, their could have been a brawl right there.
4- If you look closely, her center of gravity (hip-level) moves up in the middle of the event and during/after face contact. They means she was at the very least “pushing away” from the collision to protect herself. She was the only person that had control over how the collision is managed.
In that split second, she instinctively attacked the american. While it was unplanned, her reaction was inappropriate. I would say 60% columbian’s fault, 40% american’s fault.

I have played and watched 1000′s of soccer games but this is simply a deliberate punch in the face, she needs to be sent home. I am not a USA supporter, I am always up for the poorer countries or underdogs etc. but this was intentional, can understand accidental clash but no need for her fist to come up. She is not a “lady”!
There’s no getting around this. The Columbian player had no reason to crash into Abby. I’ve read some posts that claim that Abby changed course which caused the collision, but even if that were so, the Columbian player didn’t try to avoid the collision, nor did she reduce her speed. She essentially rammed Abby then cold cocked her in the most unprofessional and downright criminal behavior I’ve seen in sports in some time. The fact that this call wasn’t seen nor called even after a replay shows that officiating in modern times is far behind the technology that provides the clear evidence of what really happened. I’m glad the Columbians got their butts kicked 3-0.

I have watched the video and the gif and my conclusion is thus…
Wambach is running down the field, Andrade is behind and to the right. Wamback never looks back or to the side, she is focused ahead of her, so even if she changed course, she did not see Andrade behind her.
Andrade appears to be watching Wambach as she closes from behind. And we do not have a good angle of it, but it appears that Andrade might have even grabbed Wambach with her left hand or at least pushed her with her left forearm.
As soon as Andrade makes initial contact, you can see Wamback lowers her head forward, her right shoulder comes up and she appears to try and use her right arm to shield herself from Andrade. We can see at this time that Andrade’s right hand does not go all the way down as it would if she was keeping stride, rather she raises her fist then slams it into Wambach’s face, but at the same time she had planted with her right foot while twisted her body to the left for more leverage, but then has to make a hop to the right to regain balance, straightens her torso and continues on down the field.
It appears to me as if Andrade purposely made a beeline for Wambach, made first contact and punched her.

I have played soccer since I was 5 years old. Moslty defense, although not at any level past high school and Unit level tournaments in the US Army. This was a dirty play by the Colombian on a very high profile player, plain and simple. Futbol/Soccer has dirty players at every level. Its part of the game. The Colombian team should be ashamed’ especially being in the Olympics. Although this is nothing new..just a bigger stage.

If you LOOK closely, you’ll see that Wambach changes course and cuts off the Colombian, causing the collision, and at the same time, Wambach is pushing the Colombian away with her right arm. Doesn’t change the fact that she was sucker-punched, but does perhaps mitigate the circumstances just a LITTLE BIT. Not much, but it’s interesting no one seems to want to point this out…

jonesbp…that’s not entirely accurate. Any athlete running down a field or court in their sport will change course to try and keep an opponent from getting a better course. This is a physical sport and so are many others. And it’s expected. In this case, the Columbian player obviously was running at Abby with an obvious intent to try and push her. Not part of physical play, but to hurt her. Dirty play. She loaded up to push and threw an ugly, not-so-graceful upper cut that still did damage.

i wear a US jersey have played over 45 years some of that at the professional level and yes wambach should have gotten a yellow for an obstruction and then the arm going up clearly before the punch is thrown. which is why a defender 4 inches shorter got her arm over it to pound wambach so effectively which is clearly a red card. if you cant stay inpartial then stay out of the discussion. i curently wear a US Army uniform so its easy to see where my loyalties lay, that being said.

It was certainly not a chance collision. They were nowhere near the ball, Wambach cut toward Andrade and brought her shoulder into her, probably trying to push her away from the play, but then she was clearly punched, there is no doubt about it. The game today is totally out of control IMO – tripping, diving, shirt-pulling, intentional hands ball, all being allowed by the refs to various degrees. You have to expect something like this is going to happen, I don’t excuse the punch, it is definitely wrong, but if the rules of football were really enforced, we would see quite a different game (and it would be a higher scoring game, since most infractions that go unpunished favor the defense).

As Andrade encroached, Wambach was fending her off with her right arm. There may have been some elbow involved, but the punch was clearly thrown to the face.
This was CLEARLY a punch. Anyone who is saying otherwise just doesn’t want to believe that Lady Andrade was a poor sport. Sports are competitive and can bring out the worst in people who play to win. This is what happened. Her frustration with losing and not being able to do anything about it was channeled into a hard right fist. She did nothing but bring shame to her country, and the people defending Lady Andrade are in denial. We see this every year in the olympics. If it isn’t a headbutt, trip, or shove, it’s a sucker punch. I hope Lady Andrade gets what is coming to her.

This is how I see it:
a) Speedy Columbian outruns Wambach at a good pace, either to mark her or chase the play
b) Wambach angles in to slow her down and proceeds to give a solid and high elbow to Columbian neck or chest
c) Columbian loses balance a bit (look at her feet) and arm comes flying upward and hits Wambach in the face.
No wind up on Columbian part. Could she have stopped her arm or did she let it continue to retaliate for the elbow? From this replay I’ll never know. So I don’t see sanctions coming out of this.
If I were Wambach I wouldn’t call too much for a review. If they decide on the Columbian being suspended then I don’t see how they can overlook the elbow. And they would both be out. Much more important Wambach stays in the tournament for the duration.
And do I think there was some acting? Yes. That’s why I prefer to play and watch hockey. No acting. And both players would have gotten two minutes. Soccer is still good outside of that.

I don’t see any reason to call Wambach out for acting since no one is denying that she got punched in the face intentionally or not.
You can clearly see Wambach leaning in with her legs before they even make contact. She plants her feet at an angle. She was trying to get the other player out of the play and the elbow comes in way BEFORE too, it is not even remotely close. Aside from the violent elbow most leaning in is tolerated nowadays, unless the other play embellishes or there is a goal scoring opportunity missed.
If your theory is correct, Abby Wambach has eyes in the back of her head. Abby was just trying to defend her with the elbow.

If you watch the game tape, you see that Wambach already was past Andrade. The Colombian speeded up and encroached on Wambach, not the other way around. You can call that an elbow, or you can call it fending off, but the punch was clearly thrown.
Watch it again. Wamback is off the ball and “jogging” down the field. Lady comes running up as fast as she can to run into her. Abby pushes her off w/ elbow, Lady hits with fist. I think Lady had that planned all along to hit her. Knew all attention would be around the ball, and she would be able to get away with hitting Abby.
Oh yea, and did you notice after running at a slant toward Abby, Lady goes back to her original “running lane” (don’t know what to call it) and then runs straight ahead

Again, for the sake of Wambach and the US winning, it is way better if this play is not reviewed from what I saw here. The US could get one of their best players out for a few games for the possibility of getting a player ejected on a team that will not go too far.

Soccer players do have a flair for the dramatics when getting hit to draw the attention of the refs. In fact, everytime I watch a soccer game I have to remind myself it’s NOT a World Wrestling Entertainment event (AKA smackdown or Wrestlemania). When my son started to play soccer, I was thinking of hiring an acting coach rather than a soccer coach duiring the offseason. But seriously, this was a deliberate sucker punch and the Colombian was probably hoping that the refs would not catch it since the ball was not that close by.

That said, Wambach in the post-game interview said the Colombians clearly came out intending to intimidate the Americans and get inside their heads with their physical play, in an attempt to even out the mismatch. Physical play is one thing, but socking somebody in the eye is inexcusable. Oh, and later punching her in the neck. That’s inexcusable too.

The dirty Colombian Player even pushed Wambach with her left arm (hidden from camera view) setting Wambach up for the sucker punch. That move by the Colombian was a set up to possibly get Wambach to retaliate and then get thrown out so the U S would lose one of their best scorers. I was wondering if anyone else had caught that. It looks to me, too, that Andrade gave her a one-two punch. First from behind with her left, about shoulder high, you can see Wambach jerk a little forward & then *POW* right into her face. I think that is why you see Wambach’s arm come forward like it does, she’s trying to catch herself from the unexpected hit from behind just before she gets sucker punched. Then watch Andrade’s feet and hips. Nothing else, just watch her feet. She comes clear off her feet to land her blow, pushing off with her right foot, then coming back down on her right foot, doing a stutter-step to keep her balance.
Andrade needs to be benched for the rest of the Games & fined for poor sportsmanship.
Come on ya’ll, it’s quite clear to see, if you really pay attention to the video, that the American intentionally changes direction and throws a shoulder/elbow into the other player to try to knock her to the ground. The other player then tries to keep from falling down by grabbing the front of the american’s shirt….and while doing so, makes contact with her face. Somewhat intentionally? Probably yes, but only because the American tried to knock her to the ground. In the end, justice is served. The instigator gets a swollen eye. Oh, by the way, I’m american and hope the american women keep kicking booty!

LOOK CLOSELY AT BODY MOTIONS AND REACTIONS! Cherie angles towards Lady slightly to keep her out of play. The Colombian player is moving into her at a less steep angle. Lady pushes hard off her left foot to body into Cherie. She turns her upper body towards Cherie, pushing out with her chest. Cherie’s arm/elbow rises to push her off/keep her back. Now notice how Lady’s left arm disappears from view entirely. It is pushing or striking Cherie in the back, which briefly start Cherie pitching slightly forward and away from Lady. But it is quickly followed with the turning of Lady’s right shoulder inward, and the right hand comes around into contact with Cheries face. It is this twisting of the her own body that forces Lady to hop on her right leg, since she cannot cross the left leg over in normal recovery from the confrontation. What makes it abundantly clear the Colombian player got into the shoving/hitting match on purpose is the fact that she was running much faster than Cherie, could easily have passed her with no contact at all, and entered play ahead of her.

1.She is running much faster
2. she is looking at the ball, not at where she is running, i played football for a couple of years and its very easy to completely focus on the play (tunnel vision) and not see players
3. when they collide, the colombian hits Abby with her left shoulder causing her left side to go back and right side to go forward. The rotation combined with the extra speed basically means she loses control what do you do when you lose balance, you naturally stick out an arm to rebalance yourself, which unfortunately, smacks Abby in the face (which you can tell was the palm of here hand)

I am half Columbian and whether your for the Columbian team or U.S. you should be able to clearly see that was an intentional aggressive punch to the face. Wambach has quite a bit of height on Andrade and her hands were not naturally going up that high running for an accidental collide, thats ridiculous! FIFA should take disciplinary action against Andrade. Wambach was clearly just running and not instigating anything, the elbow didn’t even come up until after Andrade started delibrately colliding with Wambach with her body for a planned attack.

So what have we learned? In sports, players sometimes try to cheat or take cheap shots. And afterards, they often try to lie about it, or justify their actions. That’s not news. Frame by frame, the Colombian player has her eyes on the US players face while the US player is facing downfield. The Colombian player angles into the US player, her eyes never leaving her face, stops the rhytmic movement of her arms PRIOR to contact, lowers her right arm and brings it up into the face of the US Player. Once that action is complete, then and only then does she turn her face down field without so much as a glance downward after the intial contact. Review any video of accidental player to player contact and the instinctual response is to look at the results of the collision after the impact, even while continuing to run downfield. The Colombian players actions show an attempt to act like the impact never occured. Again, review any video of purposeful contact, and time and time again you will see the perpetuator of the action act like it never occured. The US is comprised of the most diverse population of any country of the world and has been and still is considered the best place to immigrate to. This is what makes this country strong. We have a large contingent of Colombian Americans here as well. I don’t doubt for one minute that they would take the stand of either George or Cherie. This isn’t political, this is about fair play. Justification for her response because of what we ‘can’t see’ is just obsfucation. What we do see speaks for itself.

I’m a ref and I would have red carded her..had I seen it. There is an obvious shift in her upper body to put force behind the punch. Its a different gait from how she was swinging her arms as she was running. She got cut off and was pissed. Unfortunately, the refs would have to be looking right at them to see the foul. They were most likely watching the action around the ball.

It was a sucker punch, but not planned and not completely the Columbian’s fault.
1- The American changed her running path which crossed with the columbian’s path. They were going to collide no matter what.
2- The columbian was clearly frustrated within the game before their unexpected encounter here (based on her explanation afterwards) and during the collision took it as an opportunity to vent and protect herself.
3- The collision could have been worse had the columbian not done something. Had they continued to take steps along the same running path, they would have tripped over each other easily. Both would have fallen and who knows, their could have been a brawl right there.
4- If you look closely, her center of gravity (hip-level) moves up in the middle of the event and during/after face contact. They means she was at the very least “pushing away” from the collision to protect herself. She was the only person that had control over how the collision is managed.
In that split second, she instinctively attacked the american. While it was unplanned, her reaction was inappropriate. I would say 60% columbian’s fault, 40% american’s fault.

There’s no getting around this. The Columbian player had no reason to crash into Abby. I’ve read some posts that claim that Abby changed course which caused the collision, but even if that were so, the Columbian player didn’t try to avoid the collision, nor did she reduce her speed. She essentially rammed Abby then cold cocked her in the most unprofessional and downright criminal behavior I’ve seen in sports in some time. The fact that this call wasn’t seen nor called even after a replay shows that officiating in modern times is far behind the technology that provides the clear evidence of what really happened. I’m glad the Columbians got their butts kicked 3-0.

I have watched the video and the gif and my conclusion is thus…
Wambach is running down the field, Andrade is behind and to the right. Wamback never looks back or to the side, she is focused ahead of her, so even if she changed course, she did not see Andrade behind her.
Andrade appears to be watching Wambach as she closes from behind. And we do not have a good angle of it, but it appears that Andrade might have even grabbed Wambach with her left hand or at least pushed her with her left forearm.
As soon as Andrade makes initial contact, you can see Wamback lowers her head forward, her right shoulder comes up and she appears to try and use her right arm to shield herself from Andrade. We can see at this time that Andrade’s right hand does not go all the way down as it would if she was keeping stride, rather she raises her fist then slams it into Wambach’s face, but at the same time she had planted with her right foot while twisted her body to the left for more leverage, but then has to make a hop to the right to regain balance, straightens her torso and continues on down the field.
It appears to me as if Andrade purposely made a beeline for Wambach, made first contact and punched her.

I have played soccer since I was 5 years old. Moslty defense, although not at any level past high school and Unit level tournaments in the US Army. This was a dirty play by the Colombian on a very high profile player, plain and simple. Futbol/Soccer has dirty players at every level. Its part of the game.
